Named Orleans House is a contemporary wooden home in Orleans, Massachusetts designed by Charles Rose Architects, based in Boston. Orleans House overlooking Cape Cod’s Pleasant Bay, the project has a main house, art studio and apartment living, and separate office building. Couples who commissioned Charles Rose Architects expressed interest in home design that they can enjoy throughout the year: one that will take extensive water views and natural light sites, but also will provide shelter and comfort in winter. The house, which traces the natural bowl in the landscape, is the high point perched on this site to the commanding water views. One room deep at all points, it employs a large number of beach glass to open the house to light and water, while on the land side, a low copper roof provide enough protection for private spaces that house. “This duality provides a summer home that emphasizes freedom, sunshine and exposure, and winter home allows for comfort, intimacy and enclosure,” write the authors of All American: Innovation in American Architecture.
